What would happen if Bart Simpson worked out?
For a former PR executive, his government’s inability to articulate policies and ideas is clearly alarming.
This is not an attempt to exonerate m’learned member of Parliament for Witney and his rag tag merry folk, but rather a showcase of how someone with a background in communications has failed to communicate.
David Cameron first shot to fame during Black Wednesday, the scars of which still mark parts of the Conservative mindset. Who would have thought this doe – eyed young Tory would one day be heir to Blair, leading the country to a mass privatisation orgy filled wall to wall with fellow market liberals.
The biggest and ‘best’ (depending on what you mean by this!)… well a few months ago I would have said it was the failure to explain The Big Society (by my reasoning we are on count number four of trying to explain this to the general public, and so far the fourth does not seem to be the charm). However now it may be their total inability to explain the NHS Bill.
Before entering politics, he worked in corporate communications for Carlton Television, a job which to his credit, he carried out for a period of seven years. At least one can say he had a job before entering politics, which is sadly not the case for a lot of new entrants into our political elite.
But here is what surprises me; he worked in public relations so he should know the importance of communicating to the customer. The need to take complex ideas and turn those into easily digestible bits of information. Think of the Tory party’s sheer inability to communicate the much critised NHS Bill. Aside from sending out the same double speak and platitudes aimed at the NHS, there has been a total inability to effectively communicate the benefits of the bill.
His PR instincts let him down again at the fabled NHS summit when he only invited those people who agreed with him. Whatever the excuses were that were used, it was a spectacular PR own goal. Did no one think of how this was going to look in certain parts of the traditional and social media?
Or maybe the issue is more nuanced than that; maybe one cannot communicate what are essentially terrible policies which rip through the very heart of society?
